When Her Judge Father Walked In, the Millionaire Finally Went Pale-hamyt

The slap was not loud in the way Grant Whitmore expected it to be.

He expected a gasp, maybe a little crying, maybe the soft collapse of his wife into shame while his guests watched and quietly agreed not to call it what it was.

Emily Whitmore stood with her wrist still trapped behind her back, seven months pregnant, the right side of her face hot from Vanessa Hale’s palm.

Her mouth tasted like copper.

Her baby moved under her ribs once, a hard little kick that steadied her more than it hurt her.

Grant still had his hand on her wrist when the front door opened.

There were already pale marks there, five blunt ovals pressed into her skin.

Vanessa lowered her hand halfway, then froze as if she had forgotten how a body was supposed to move after being caught.

“Robert,” Grant said, forcing out a laugh that sounded thin and wrong, “this is a private family matter.”

Judge Callahan looked at Emily’s cheek.

Then he looked at the semicircle of guests around the dining room.

“That is what men say when they know the room saw them clearly,” he said.

Grant’s smile twitched.

He tried to recover because recovery was what Grant believed money was for.
