By the time Emma Hartley reached the front porch, the cranberry sauce had gone cold in the grocery bag.

The cans knocked together against her hip as she balanced the bag, her purse, and the spare house key she still used because nobody in that house had ever bothered to change the locks.

The dining room light was on.

That was why she smiled, just a little, before she opened the door.

For most of that week, she had told herself Thanksgiving might be different.

Mom had sounded almost sweet on the phone that afternoon, rushed and needy in the familiar way that always pulled Emma back toward her.

She had asked for cranberry sauce “before dinner started.”

Emma had heard those words and built a whole picture around them.

A noisy table.

A chair saved for her.

A normal holiday where Gary complained about football, Madison took too many pictures, and Mom forgot to say thank you but at least remembered Emma existed.

Instead, the house opened around her like a staged room.

There were no voices from the kitchen.

No oven door slamming.

No Madison calling from the hallway that Emma was late again.

Only the low hum of the refrigerator and the smell of a meal that had been left out long enough to lose its warmth.

Emma stepped inside with her coat still buttoned and the grocery bags cutting into her wrists.
