Martha was standing in the produce aisle when the message came through.

She was holding a plastic bag of apples, the kind she bought because they kept well and because she had lived alone long enough to know exactly what would go bad in the refrigerator and what would not.

The grocery store was ordinary around her.

Carts bumped softly against displays.

A child begged for cereal.

A cashier called for a price check.

Martha stared at her daughter’s message and felt the old familiar pressure behind her ribs, the one that always came when Chloe decided the world would be easier if Martha simply stepped aside.

The message did not say, “Can we use your apartment?”

It did not say, “Would it be possible?”

It said, “We need.”

Then came the second message.

“You can stay at a hotel.”

A link appeared underneath it.

The hotel was near the airport, modest and forgettable, selected with the same breezy confidence Chloe used when she chose restaurants and then expected Martha to split bills she had not ordered.

Martha stood with the apples in her hand and understood that Chloe had already imagined the weekend without her.

Her own kitchen.
