My grandfather noticed the shirt before he noticed the bill.

I had not showered properly in three days.

I had tried twice.

Both times, a nurse had come in with paperwork, or the baby had cried, or my body had made it painfully clear that standing for more than two minutes was not the brave idea I wanted it to be.

The shirt I wore was the same one I had brought from home in my little plastic hospital bag.

It was stretched out, milk-stained, and stiff in places I did not want to think about.
