Grandpa Heard His Granddaughter Cry At 12:47 A.M. Then The ER Moved-hamyt

The call came in the kind of darkness that makes every sound in a house feel too loud.

I had been asleep long enough for the room to go still, the heater to stop clicking, and the old boards in my hallway to settle down.

I reached for it half-awake, expecting a wrong number, a weather alert, maybe one of those automated calls that should be illegal after midnight.

Cassidy’s name was on the screen.

At 12:47 a.m., that name was not a comfort.

It was a warning.

When I answered, I did not hear my daughter first.

I heard Lydia.

My six-year-old granddaughter was crying so hard her breath kept catching in her throat.

For a moment, I could not make the words line up.

Then she forced out, “Papa… Mommy says the baby’s coming. Please come fast.”

Every bit of sleep left my body.

I sat up so fast the blanket hit the floor.

“Lydia, sweetheart,” I said, already reaching for my jeans, “where’s your father?”

There was no answer at first.

Only crying.

I could hear something else behind her too, a low sound from somewhere in the room, the kind of sound a grown woman makes when she is trying not to scare a child.

Then Lydia whispered the sentence that changed the whole night.

“He hurt Mommy’s belly… then he left.”

I stopped moving for half a second.

Not because I did not understand.

Because I understood too clearly.

Cassidy was not due for another six weeks.
