Grandma Branded a Child a Thief. Then the Trust File Opened-lequyen994

There were girls calling across the sidewalk, sneakers squeaking on the gym steps, somebody asking for a ride, somebody else begging for a sleepover, and Lily in the middle of it all with her ponytail half-fallen and her face bright from moving.

That afternoon, there was none of that.

Lily sat by herself in a gray hoodie, eyes down, both hands wrapped around the strap of her dance bag as if it was the last piece of her old life she could still hold.

The late buses hissed at the curb.

She clicked the seat belt, placed the dance bag on the floor, and stared through the windshield like she was trying not to exist.

Sarah pulled out of the pickup lane slowly.

The school buildings slid past in the rearview mirror, brick and glass and bright flags near the entrance, ordinary things that suddenly felt like they belonged to other families.

Sarah waited until they were a few blocks away before she asked the safest question she could find.

“Practice end early?”

Lily’s jaw tightened.

“I’m not on the team anymore.”

Sarah kept both hands on the wheel.
