The first thing Megan did when she walked into Aaron’s birthday party was look for the largest audience.

That told me everything.

She did not look for me first, or Clare, or the nearest quiet hallway where two adults might end a broken marriage without turning it into a sport.

Aaron’s living room was full of them.

His wife Lisa had taped paper streamers over the doorway, somebody had opened a bag of chips on the side table, and the birthday cake was still sweating cold from the refrigerator.

I remember all of that because fear makes tiny things bright.

Megan came in wearing a black dress and the expression she used when she wanted people to think she was being brave.

It was the same expression she had worn at our wedding whenever anyone called me lucky.

Clare was beside me near the kitchen doorway.

She did not grab my hand, because Clare never performed ownership, but her shoulder brushed mine once, a quiet reminder that I was not standing there alone.

Aaron saw Megan and muttered, “No.”

Lisa put the cake knife down.

Megan lifted a folder like she had brought a verdict.

“Everyone should hear this,” she said.

That was when the party ended, even though no one had moved.

Two weeks earlier, my wife had ended three years of marriage with a text message.

It said, “Your friends are losers. They’re dragging you down. We’re breaking up.”

I was sitting outside Aaron’s house for a barbecue, watching Clare carry a tray of corn through the yard and laugh at something one of the kids had said.

My phone buzzed, and there it was.

No conversation.

No dignity.
