Locked Out With Her Newborn, She Opened the Deed He Forgot About-hamyt

By the time Paige Larkin saw the red flash on the keypad, her whole body was already past tired.

She had not slept more than pieces of an hour since giving birth.

Her daughter was three days old, small enough that the blanket seemed bigger than the baby, and Paige held her close with the careful fear new mothers learn before anyone teaches it.

The June rain had turned the front steps slick.

The porch light made every drop look silver as it slid down the door glass.

Inside, the house looked warm.

That was the cruelest part.

The lamps were on.

The nursery upstairs glowed softly through the curtain.

The house looked as if it was waiting for a mother and a baby to come home, but the lock said otherwise.

Paige shifted the diaper bag higher on her shoulder and punched in the code she had used for years.

The keypad flashed red.

She stared at it for one breath.

Then she tried again.

Red.

Her daughter made a small sound under the blanket, not a cry exactly, more like a complaint against the cold air.

Paige pressed her lips to the baby’s hat and whispered that it was okay.

She was not sure which one of them she was trying to convince.

Her wrist still wore the hospital band.

It scraped against the baby blanket when she adjusted her grip, a tiny plastic reminder that her body had just done something enormous and was now being asked to stand in the rain like a stranger.

On the third attempt, the keypad rejected her again.

That was when Paige stopped thinking she had typed it wrong.

She called Bryce Callahan.

No answer.
