The hallway outside the guest room smelled like lemon polish and vanilla wax.

Margaret Whitaker knew because Brianna had made a whole performance out of that candle, the kind that came in a heavy glass jar and cost more than a week of groceries used to cost when Margaret was young.

Daniel stood in the doorway.

Brianna stood just behind him.

That was the part Margaret noticed first.

Her son had placed his wife half a step behind his shoulder, close enough to look supported, far enough to look innocent.

“Get out of this house,” Daniel said.

His voice was loud, but not out of control.

Anger can spill out by accident, but this sounded chosen.

“My wife isn’t comfortable having you around,” he continued. “Pack your things and be gone by morning.”

Margaret looked at him for a long moment.

The boy she had raised used to come home from baseball practice with dirt on his cheeks and sunflower seed shells in the cuffs of his jeans.

He used to fall asleep in the passenger seat before they even made it out of the school parking lot.

After his father died, he used to crawl into her bed some nights and ask whether bills kept making noise even when the house was quiet.

She had told him no.

That had been a lie told out of love.

Bills always made noise.

They hummed inside drawers, flashed in the corner of your mind while you loaded the dishwasher, and waited on the kitchen table in envelopes with windows in them.

Margaret had learned to answer that noise alone.

She paid Daniel’s college tuition in full because she refused to let grief put a price tag on his future.

When his construction company started failing three years earlier, she handled that too.
