My name is Captain Linda Morse, and I was thirty-three when my own brother tried to kill me on the oak floor my father had laid by hand.
I wish I could say that sentence sounds less real when I say it out loud now, but it does not.
Even after everything I had seen overseas, even after the kind of chaos that makes your ears ring for hours and your hands shake only after the danger is gone, nothing prepared me for what happened in my father’s living room three days after we buried him.

The house on Washington Avenue still looked like grief had moved in and refused to leave. Funeral lilies sat in heavy glass vases by the front window, and the sweet smell had already started to turn. Aluminum pans lined the kitchen counters like people had been trying to feed the sorrow out of the room one casserole at a time. Tuna noodle. Baked ziti. Scalloped potatoes. Green bean casserole with the canned fried onions Dad claimed he hated and always ate anyway.
My coffee was cold before I finished the first half of the mug. Then it went cold again. Then it sat there, dark and metallic, while I listened to footsteps upstairs and tried to convince myself that nobody in my own family would be crazy enough to fight over a house before the paperwork was even filed.
I was wrong.
My brother Damian came down the stairs first, broad-shouldered, forty years old, expensive haircut, quarter-zip sweater, and that polished face of his that could almost fool strangers into thinking he was kind. Behind him was Saraphina, my sister-in-law, in a black silk blouse and thin gold hoops, looking like she had already decided the grief in the room was just clutter.
She was on the phone before she even sat down.
“No, I said sell it. I am not interested in waiting for a rebound.”
She saw me looking and did not lower her voice.
Damian settled into my father’s brown chair like he had inherited the whole room by sitting in it. He laced his fingers together, leaned forward, and said, “Lin, we need to talk about practical things.”
Practical.
That was the word people used when they wanted cruelty to sound organized.
He said the house was too much for one person. He said my schedule was unstable. He said I had obligations, as if being the daughter who stayed, who showed up, who handled the hard things, somehow made me the one who should leave.
Saraphina ended her call and added, “It’s a dead asset. Beautiful lot, sure, but emotionally you’re clinging to timber and plumbing.”
Timber and plumbing.
This was the room where Dad taught me to shuffle cards. The room where he fell asleep during baseball games with his glasses slipping down his nose. The room where he hugged me so hard the day I got into West Point that I thought he might tear the envelope in half.
“It’s my home,” I said.
The doorbell rang before Damian could answer. For one irrational second, I felt relief so fast it was almost shameful, like the house itself had reached out for help.
Arthur Finch stood on the porch in his old brown wool coat, carrying the same battered leather briefcase he had carried since I was in middle school. He had been my father’s lawyer for forty years, and he had the tired, careful face of a man who knew one wrong sentence could split a family in two.
We sat at the dining room table under the white cloth my mother had embroidered with tiny blue flowers before cancer took her when I was fifteen.
He opened the will.
The house was mine.
Not because my father loved Damian less. Not because I had twisted an old man’s arm while he was dying. The language in the file was clean and precise. The probate packet. The deed transfer. The Franklin County appraisal sheet. The signed witness affidavit. Every page said the same thing: Arthur Morse had left Washington Avenue to his daughter, Linda Morse, with instructions that I pay Damian half of the appraised value within five years.
